Have you ever thought about what unbelief really is? Unbelief is actually faith. It’s just faith in something other than God and what He’s said.
When Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, they were in faith. But their faith was in what the serpent said instead of what God had said. Their unbelief was just their God-given faith misdirected, causing them to believe a lie. We are faith-beings. God created us that way.
That is why people pick up a religion even when they claim to not believe in God. Man has to put his faith in something, even if only in the religion of eastern religions, or new age thinking, or evolution, etc. They’ll tell you straight up, “I believe” in evolution or in meditation or something else other than Good. No one “believes” in nothing.
Believing is a choice, it’s a decision you make. Just as faith is a powerful force, there is also a force opposed to faith called fear and UNBELIEF. Charles Capps says, “Fear is the reverse gear of faith”. It is actually faith in the devil’s ability that eliminates your faith in the possibilities of God. Unbelief Is FAITH in fear.” We fall away from Christ through unbelief. “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” (I Cor 10:12)
Faith governs our lives. We use faith every day. No one can function without faith. All of our actions are based on faith. We use cars or planes believing that they’re safe enough to get us there. But if we base our faith on things that contradict God’s Word, we’re in unbelief and using faith in reverse.
Therefore, unbelief is actually the power of faith working in a negative way. Just as faith is the power that releases God’s ability and therefore is our victory to overcome. unbelief is the power that releases the will of Satan in our lives. Therefore, realize that you do have faith and you use it every day in either a positive or negative way. “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” 1Jn 5:4)
James likened a doubting person to a wave of the sea, unstable, driven to and fro: “But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.” (Jam1:6)
Unbelief is not a light matter, it can totally cause you to walk away from God. “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.” (Hebrews 3:12)
That is why we must watch not only what we eat, for the sake of our physical body, but WATCH what we watch and hear for the sake of our spiritual being. Jesus said to Thomas, “Because thou hast seen Me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” (Jn 20:27-30) We must choose to direct our faith in the positive direction of God by basing it on the promises in His Word. They’re infallible.
