When it comes to renewing the mind, the key is consistency. You cannot make a push in studying the Word for a while, and then let up, thinking that you are all renewed, all cleaned up. Your mind is constantly thinking either on the things of God or on the things of the world. Therefore, if you are not consistent in the Word, you will fall back into the world.
God calls people to be transformed by the (ongoing) renewing of their minds. (Rom 12:2). This transformation of thinking God’s thoughts is a daily pursuit.
Writing down in a notebook the main points of what you’re reading and learning is one of the best ways to retain what you learn. Even if you never go back to your notes, it causes you to meditate on the Word. It gives the Holy Spirit a chance to confirm and affirm the main points that He wants you to hold on to and ponder on.
And make sure to commit to memory the main verses. That’s a sure way to renew your mind. To renew your memory. That’s what God told Joshua, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” (Joshua 1:8).
Speaking the Word of God out loud is also very powerful. The spoken Word of God in your mouth will strengthen your spirit. The “speaking” is the beginning of the commiting, and of the DOING. It strengthens your faith. You then think how God thinks and speak how God speaks. It will cause you to keep your eyes on Jesus and default to the Word in times of storms.
Jesus paid an enormous price not only for you to be redeemed of your sinful nature and sinful living, but He came to “redeem THAT which was lost” (Lk 9:10). THAT relationship that man had with God, His father, was lost when Adam disobeyed. So the renewing of the mind is the most important part of becoming a disciple of Jesus. Why? Because it has to be a continued relationship. Jesus said, “If you continue in My Words, then are you My disciples indeed, and then, you shall know the TRUTH and then the TRUTH of the Word shall make you FREE.” (Jn 8:31-32).
The more time we spend with a person, the better we get to know them. The same thing happens with God. The more we spend time with Him, the more we get to know Him, what He likes, how He acts, why He said the things He said, etc.
God doesn’t want us to think like the world thinks. “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isa 55:8-9).
God wants us to change the way we think so we can access everything He has for us. “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” (Rom 8:5-6).
That’s what putting on your “new identity” in Christ is all about. As a new creation in Christ, we must replace the old carnal way of thinking with His Word so we can experience everything that He has for us, not only when we get to heaven but especially here on earth. His Word is life and health, full of promises, abundance, healing, and deliverance. This is the life He wants for us to live and enjoy.
His Word is the key to overcoming the devil and to live a successful life. His Word teaches us how to deal with life. By replacing the old way of thinking with the Word of God, you will be more like your Heavenly Father.
Most people will think of exercising their body before exercising their mind. Most folks think they do not have control over their thoughts. But the Word makes it clear that we can take captive any thoughts that don’t align with the Word of God. You can choose your thoughts. When something pops into your head and you know that you shouldn’t be thinking about that, you can replace that thought with a different one. The Bible calls it casting down imaginations. “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Cor 10:5).
Because our mind is so powerful, we need to learn to control it and not let it control us. The way that you control it is by staying away from thoughts that are not a blessing to you and instead meditate on the Word of God. If your mind is not aligned with God’s Word, your thoughts can get you in trouble. Go to the Word of God instead and make His Words your thoughts and cast down any other thought that goes against the will of God.
How do you control that undisciplined mind? Paul says, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think [ONLY] on these things.” (Phil 4:8).
When we hear bad news, our mind will default to the worst-case scenarios. But when we renew our mind, those thoughts are automatically replaced by the Word of God and His promises.
Do we call ourselves Christians and yet our mind is of the world? Do we watch TV shows that feed fear and unbelief? Do we listen to music with lyrics that contradict God’s Word? Do we read books that bring thoughts into our mind that do not align with the Word of God?
Our mind is like our stomach, it has no control over what we put in. So, if we are feeding our mind the wrong kind of food, it’ll be sick the same as our stomach when you dump junk food into it. Renewing means to replace. So you need to replace the old habits, the old shows, the old music, etc., with new thoughts. You must be willing to give up the things that are keeping you from going deeper in your relationship with God.
Discipline yourself to listen to Bible teachers and pastors whose goals are to disciple you, read books that will help you grow, and add value to your life. “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” (Jam 4:8).
Nothing will help you develop a strong relationship with God as much as renewing your mind with God’s Word. God’s Word is God’s mind. It’s His will.
Remember, God is looking for a relationship with you, He wants to be part of your life, part of your every day. Jesus said that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Heb 13:5) so He is with you all the time. Talk to Him, listen to Him. Get to know Him through His Word.
A mind renewed with the Word of God is strong, healthy, wise and empowered to do everything that God has you to do.
